| New Park, PA – Celebrating six
years of fun and challenge for thousands of regional visitors, Maize Quest,
the Cornfield Maze Adventure brings the mystery and excitement of Australia,
the land down under, to Southern York County with its 2002 installation,
“Outback Adventure.” Located at Maple Lawn Farms in New Park, PA, the
new maze opens on Friday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m. and features 10,000 feet
of pathways cut through more than 300,000 living cornstalks. Tickets at $7
for adults and $5 for children 4 to 12 cover a variety of on-site amusement
options. Call 866.WE.LOSE.U Option 4 for info, reservations and discounts to

Maize Quest in York County, America’s First Maze Theme
Park, proudly announces the addition of two new maze installations,
bringing the total count to seven mazes at the flagship location. The
Stone Labyrinth replicates an ancient and artistically pleasing Celtic
design created with river rocks around a 31,000 pound spire-like boulder in
the center. The Tortoise & Toad (Meadow) Maze offers a relaxing
nature walk along paths dotted with a gazebo and benches to observe native
plants, butterflies, birds and more. Maze Mountain, the 80-foot giant
tube slide, headlines the list of additional attractions at the park.
“Maize Quest 2002 delivers an interactive adventure and
unique experience to our guests,” said organizer and Maze Master Hugh
McPherson. “We specialize in family-oriented good times that include
opportunities to learn fun facts on our theme, test instincts and abilities,
and work together to achieve a goal.”
Visitors to Maize Quest enter the complex through the
Command Center. Welcoming staff members hand out the game sheets, brief
guests on their mission and send them into the corn for an “Outback
Adventure.” Once in the maze, guests read storyboards, answer questions on
the game sheets and create their own map to navigate the twists and turns.
Inspired by the unique animals and the fascinating lore of the Australian
outback, the all-new Maize Quest design challenges families and adventurous
adults to escape by pathways that trace the body a giant kangaroo holding a
young joey in its mouth.
To make sure they find the way out, maze patrons can ask
for help with the use of a signal flag given to each person in the Command
Center at the start. Staff members man a 40-foot Observation Deck, also open
to visitors, to keep an eye on the maze. They are also available inside the
maze to give hints to the frustrated. Maize Quest provides outdoor adventure
in a safe environment.
Created by the veteran maze wizard Dave Phillips, “Outback
Adventure” includes stamp stations throughout the 8-acre puzzle. The paths
through the maze feature two bridges that afford a treetop view of the
design for guests as they search for the way out of Australia, the island
continent.
Rising from the cornfield’s edge to amaze visitors, the
45-foot tall Maze Mountain tops the list of favorite attractions at
Maize Quest. Created from 40,000 cubic feet of solid Pennsylvania farmland,
the grass-covered behemoth features a giant 80-foot tube slide down its face
from the summit to a soft pit of sawdust. Would-be sliders and others
seeking a premier view of the maze complex and beautiful surrounding
countryside can reach the mountain’s peak and observation deck by hiking the
pathway up its backside.
“With Maze Mountain, we’ve added a signature feature to
set our maze apart and provide additional value to our guests,” said Hugh
McPherson. “We’re proud to be Central Pennsylvania’s fastest growing
theme-entertainment location.”
Near Maze Mountain, entrepreneur McPherson installed the
site’s first Rope Maze constructed in the shape of Captain Cornelius’
four-masted, sea-going tall ship. Using over 1600 feet of two-inch nautical
rope purchased from a shipyard in Louisiana, the design challenges
participants to negotiate the decks (or paths) to the ship’s center, and
climb up a cargo net to reach the crow’s nest, a six-foot high 10’x10’
platform. From there, would-be mates must also find their way back to shore
(the exit).
Added to Maize Quest in 2000, The Ever-Changing Fence
Maze, made of wooden gates that change patterns each week, and The
Bamboozle, the world’s first maze of living bamboo, continue to intrigue
visitors. For younger Maize Questers, nothing beats the ever-popular
Giant Straw Bale Maze as a place of delight to expend their boundless
energy. Positioned nearby, The Picnic Pavilion serves as a place to
host birthday parties, meetings and family gatherings. The Maize Quest
Command Center offers concessions and a gift shop for guest
convenience.
Maize Quest holds challenges for all types of school
groups, scout troops and youth groups. The maze allows each group leader to
develop his/her own theme for the group’s adventure. Groups may schedule
special events and times to visit Maize Quest. Study guides and educational
materials are available on request. Call the Maize Quest hotline at
